What is a Sinus Rinse?
What’s the deal with these people pouring water into their noses?

Basically, a sinus rinse is a rinsing of the germs and other material from the nostrils and sinus passages. It’s still new to some of us, but it’s been around for a long time. In India, it’s been used for hundreds of years as part of a healthy lifestyle, and in certain forms of yoga.
It’s known by several other names; including nasal rinse, nasal irrigation, nasal lavage, and nose douche. And yes, we can call it anything you like–if it makes you smile, even better.
There are lots of methods products you can use, but the easiest way is to collect water in your hand and simply snort the water. This isn’t believed to be the best way, though–and we can vouch for the fact that snorting regular tap water can make your sinuses burn and sting.
Another easy method is to pour a solution of salt water into one nostril, while letting the water flow back out through the other nostril. If you try this one, you’ll need to breathe through your mouth while you’re rinsing.
Especially lately, a device called a “Neti pot” has been gaining popularity. Usually made from glass, ceramic or metal, these little containers are filled with a saltwater solution. Then, the liquid is poured into one nostril, while letting it drain from the other nostril. Some people will allow the saltwater to flow into one nostril, and then drain from their mouth–but doing a nasal rinse in this way takes some practice. Swallowing the saltwater would be about like taking a big gulp of the ocean, and can make us nauseous.
Saltwater sprays have also been used to clean further into the sinuses. Some studies have shown that a sinus rinse works best when the saltwater solution is delivered with a little bit if pressure. Instead of just flowing naturally into the sinuses, the fluid is squirted into the nostrils with a gentle force–enough to be effective in clearing out the mucus and other material that can cause us problems. In these studies, a larger amount of fluid seemed to have better results than the smaller amounts did.
